I am going on vacation for 10 days and have no one to take care of my peace lily, snake plant, and two tropical plants. Is there anything I can do to keep them alive while I am gone? Could I add extra water to them?
How long will my houseplants survive without water?
Don't overwater them but water them just before you leave. then place a little water on a dish or baking pan under each pot. if you place a plastic bag or dry cleaning bag over each plant you will create a little moist microcosm for each plant. Sort of like a terrarium. You will want to poke one or two tiny holes in the bag though just to make sure the plants don't suffocate. I've never tried this technique but I've seen it done with success. Some garden shops sell drip systems for indoor plants that you might be able to use while you're away.
Reply:I would water them good just before I left and then set the containers in a large pot or dishpan or bathtub with some water in them so they can get water from the bottom. Some will be ok for a week, some may last 2 weeks, 10 days is cutting it close for some plants.
Reply:You can fill your bath tub or a big dish with enough water to come up the sides of the pots. Set them in it and they will absorb the water as needed.
Reply:It all depnds on wht kind of plants you have. most can goa week with out water. if you have any cactus just water them a little bit %26amp; they will be fine for a long while they like dry any way. for others you cna put in sink with some water in it for them to get water from or just wet them on a sponge in water %26amp; they will get what they need from it.
