Is Broad-Leaf Plantain Related To Either The Water Plantain Or The Water Lily?

Plantain - Plantae, Magnoliophyta, Liliopsida, Zingiberales, Musaceae, Musa, sp.

Broad-leaf Plantain - Plantae, Magnoliophytae, Magnoliopsida, Lamiales, Plantaginaceae, Plantago, major

Water Plantain - Plantae, Magnoliophytae, Liliopsida, Alismatales, Alismataceae, Alisma, sp.

Water Lily - Plantae, Magnoliophytae, Magnoliopsida, Nymphaeales, Nymphaeaceae, gen, sp.

None of these are in the same family or even the same order.

...

I already gave you the full classification of broad-leaf plantain. lance-leaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is in the same genus as broad-leaf plantain. they are related to one another but not in any significant way to the other plants you mentioned.

only for it to reach the surface. the thing is it multipies, and can make 20 flowers after that original plant

What adaptations has the water lily made in order to survive in its environment?

I think this belongs here, but I'm not sure. Sorry if it doesn't!

What adaptations has the water lily made in order to survive in its environment?
Terrestrial plants such as trees have to develop an enormous quantity of structural material in order to rise above all the other plants and collect the lion's share of the light available. Water lilies provide a neat example of a plant which has managed to do exactly the same thing, but with the minimum of structural material. Weak stems produce a massive floating canopy of leaves which dominate the local aquatic plant community just as effectively as trees dominate in a woodland. The difference lies in their external medium. Water provides all the necessary support, whereas air does not.
Reply:In addition to what Virginia said,

1. Water lily leaves have their stomata on the upper surface instead of the lower surface -- takes advantage of exposure of upper surface to the air. (Stomata are the pores in the leaf epidermis that allow exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen.)

2. Leaves lay out flat for maximum exposure to sunlight.
Reply:i would also mention aerenchyme - the tissue that has big intercellulars (spaces between cells) that provides air for the undewater parts of the plants. like if you make a crossection of leaf petiole (connects the leaf blade to the rhizome and roots) it feels like a fluffy sponge - full of air

Er.... any plant will do. It is just that this plant grows fast and already is in water. That makes it an ideal candidate to proses it automatically.

It was a logical choice. Not sure it was anyone that discovered it.

What is the difference between a water lily and a lotus flower?

Although there is a botanical distinction, the lotus and water lily are often used interchangeably in folklore and mythology. Generally lotus refers to the water lily of India or the plant depicted in sacred art and stories, while the water lily is more often used by naturalists. As an example of the confusion, the World Book actually has two entries, one for the lotus, one for the water lily, both clearly referring to the same plant and neither referring to the other entry.

Why has my Water Lily produced no flowers this year?

There are times when mine don't bloom either. Some one told me that it could be that either the water is too hot or too cold and that they be too many in the pot and they may need to be separated into other pots. In my case, they needed to be separated into other pots, I even gave some away.

Why has my Water Lily produced no flowers this year?
Overcrowded plants will not bloom so this could be the cause.

You can generally tell if the plant is overcrowded because it will start to send some of it's leaves up above the water instead of them just laying on the surface.

Divide in the spring.
Reply:With some varieties depth of water is crucial. Dividing the plants in the spring can help too. Also, make sure that they are not in moving water.

I don't wish to add to your misery, but we adopted these measures this year and have had so far 11 blooms from one plant, with more to come! Much better than last year when we had 2 miserable blooms from several (overcrowded) plants.

Is the water lily a monocot?

If so, what venation does it have?

Is the water lily a monocot?
Water lily is dicot with reticulate venation . It is in Nympheaceae family of dicots.
Reply:no the water lilly is a dicot- the venation is dedritic or reticulated

Dicotyledons or "dicots" is a name for a group of flowering plants whose seed typically contains two embryonic leaves or cotyledons
Reply:No - it's definitely not a monocot and technically not a eudicot either. The lineage that contains the water lily, the Nymphaeales, precedes the monocot/eudicot split and is generally considered a 'nonmonocot paleoherb'.

The leaves vary from palmate to pinnate venation.

Why is the water lily able to hold frogs on top of it where else its leaf is very light??

If you have taken chemistry I am sure you would spend a chapter on surface tension and any other unusual properties of water. Water has very high surface tension.

Why is the water lily able to hold frogs on top of it where else its leaf is very light??
water lily leaves have an edge to them and they are kind of glued to the water like skin ,the frog is not very heavy.so the leaf out of the water will flop and can not hold the frog but glued to the water it can because of the surface tension
Reply:Surface Tension

Are all water lily silly?
The Star and the Water-Lily

THE SUN stepped down from his golden throne,

And lay in the silent sea,

And the Lily had folded her satin leaves,

For a sleepy thing was she;

What is the Lily dreaming of? 5

Why crisp the waters blue?

See, see, she is lifting her varnished lid!

Her white leaves are glistening through!

The Rose is cooling his burning cheek

In the lap of the breathless tide;— 10

The Lily hath sisters fresh and fair,

That would lie by the Rose's side;

He would love her better than all the rest,

And he would be fond and true;—

But the Lily unfolded her weary lids, 15

And looked at the sky so blue.

Remember, remember, thou silly one,

How fast will thy summer glide,

And wilt thou wither a virgin pale,

Or flourish a blooming bride? 20

"O the rose is old, and thorny, and cold,

And he lives on earth," said she;

"But the Star is fair and he lives in the air,

And he shall my bridegroom be."

But what if the stormy cloud should come, 25

And ruffle the silver sea?

Would he turn his eye from the distant sky,

To smile on a thing like thee?

O no, fair Lily, he will not send

One ray from his far-off throne; 30

The winds shall blow and the waves shall flow,

And thou wilt be left alone.

There is not a leaf on the mountain-top

Nor a drop of evening dew,

Nor a golden sand on the sparkling shore, 35

Nor a pearl in the waters blue,

That he has not cheered with his fickle smile,

And warmed with his faithless beam,—

And will he be true to a pallid flower,

That floats on the quiet stream? 40

Alas for the Lily! she would not heed,

But turned to the skies afar,

And bared her breast to the trembling ray

That shot from the rising star;

The cloud came over the darkened sky, 45

And over the waters wide:

She looked in vain through the beating rain,

And sank in the stormy tide.

Is the water lily diciduous or evergreen,Is it native to Australia?

There are lots of waterlilies native to Australia plus a few introduced ones. The concepts of evergreen and deciduous are a bit difficult to apply to a waterlily. Most species are perennials with a large rhizome that stores food so that the plants can survive the dry season when the waterholes and lakes in tropical Australia dry up. So they do lose their leaves but it is a survival strategy for the dry season.

I bought water lily bulbs to grow in my fish tank?

so i've had them for almost a week and they have like this white filmy type thing arround them one of them that was in the water longer doesn't have as much but the other one is completly surrounded by it. it looks like a transparent spider egg's nest thinger.... is that how it's soposed to look or is something wrong??

I bought water lily bulbs to grow in my fish tank?
They are most likely dud bulbs that are beginning to rot. Many times, the bulbs die if they are left dry too long, however, there is a chance they could pulll through. I would suggest putting them in a shallow plate of water with a paper towel covering them. In the future, you should try to find bulbs that have already sprouted roots or leaves.

Can someone please explain to me what is the difference between a Lotus flower and a Water Lily?

I understand that Water Lilies lie right on the water, while Lotuses are a few inches above water. Do they look exactly the same? I kept comparing and contrasting between the two with google and pictures, and I think they look similar and some looks different. I am really interested in knowing whats the difference, especially if they look the same. Just like alligators and crocs, i can't differentiate them.

Can i float a water lily on the surface of my beta's fish bowl?

i read that you can use any water plants in a fish bowl for betas.

is this a good idea?

and where can i get water lilies?--- walmart, lowes etc...

Can i float a water lily on the surface of my beta's fish bowl?
I don't see why not.

May have better luck with an aquatic garden center, pet store, aquarium store or maybe call a local garden center (NOT a home improvement store) and ask if they have or know of a store that sells aquatic plants.
Reply:You should be OK, as long as it dosen't fully cover the top, bettas also get some of their oxygen from the air. It sounds like a neat idea.
Reply:who said you couldnt like bubbles they add security
Reply:No. This wil kill your fish. Bettas absorb oxygen from the surface of the water. Adding a floating plant would block this oxygen. A small underwater plant is great.
Reply:ummm..... apart from the fact its extremely cruel and these fish need a very specific area on the water surface to breath because they have a special organ called the labrinth organ which is basically a lung and they use it to breath air from the water surface. because it cant store much air at once, the betta need to keep visiting the surface to collect more so if i were you i wouldnt bother
Reply:Go to a pet shop. some plants will depleat the water of oxygen and will harm the fish. Most pet shops have good aquatic plants. i think that water lilies are one of the oxygen depleters. Go to lowe's and ask for deiffenbachia, since this plan can live on the water and won't harm the fish.
Reply:The beta won't mind the plant, just be sure that you change a portion of the water regularly and still feed the beta with beta food. A lot of people think that they will just eat on the roots of the plants and they are meat eaters so the plant roots aren't really appealing.

There are usually pond-type plants at any pet store that has aquatics like a Petsmart or PetCo.

Water lily facts?...?

for science I have to do a report about water lilies. Can anyone help me find some facts?

Water lily facts?...?
Sure

-- There are about 40 species of water lily in the world [though another website--the second link--says around 70]

-- Some water lily species prefer southerly warmth and are found in temperate and semi-tropical zones, some prefer the cold and are found only in northern Canada and Alaska.

--These are grouped into: night, tropical and hardy. Night lilies bloom in the night. Tropical lilies can be found in tropical climates and bloom at all times of the day. Hardy lilies are able to withstand most conditions and are the most common.

-- Water lilies are also able to reproduce by budding. The roots detach and grow into new water lilies. The root of the lily is located in the mud at the bottom of a pond

--They grow and live on the edge of ponds and lakes, in the shallow water. Water lilies usually live in water that is rich in oxygen and receives a lot of sunlight.

--Water lilies get their food through photosynthesis. Water fowl, muskrats and raccoons are some of the water lilies' predators.

--The largest water lily is the Giant Water Lily. It can be found in the Amazon. It can grow to be 2 feet to 6 feet in diameter. It provides food for fish and wildlife.

--The Yellow Lily's roots are sometimes eaten. White Lily's roots are used to treat sore mouths. The smoke from some lilies burning roots has been used to repel insects.

How do you prune a snowflake water lily? It is vinelike, not single stem.?

It is like a vine, one leaf grows out of another, not like the other lillies that each leaf comes off its own stalk. A secondary problem is the little "snowflake" flowers that grow off each pad, up to 20 sometimes, die and then just lay in the water off the pad. It is making a place for algea to collect and I don't know how to prune it . I cut the stem all the way at the base for a regular lily.

Any place that sells water garden accessories. Usually large garden centers or greenhouses. They are tubers in a "ventilated" pot. Just drop them in the water.

Question about my water lily and Hyacinth?

I have a small pond I started about a month ago. I have a few fish and the pond seems to be pretty clean. The water lily I have has one flower in bloom and one bloom that all of sudden started to turn brown and doesn't look very good. What makes that. I guess I should just cut it off shouldn't I. Also some parts of the hyacinth is looking dead and slimy. I also have a piece of water lettuce. The pond gets full sun and was recommended to me that I have pleanty of plants to keep the algee down. My fish seem to be fine. Any helpful hints on taking care of these plants would be appreciated.

Thanks

Question about my water lily and Hyacinth?
water lilies do this. put a fertilizer stake in it every couple of weeks.just insert it in the soil an inch or so.it will not hurt the fish. the hyacinth's also do turn brown and slimy on parts. you just need to break the yucky part off,and it will look better.it will not hurt the plants, they grow very fast,as you will see. the same thing on the water lettuce.have fun, they are so neat in yard's or garden's!
Reply:They are fine, picture them in nature, they look brown from time to time, it's all good, and good luck.

I have a small water garden. Every time that I add a water lily the raccoon invades Is it the water lily?

Is there something about the water lily that is attracting raccoons to trash my water garden/fish pond. when there is no water lily the coons leave the fish and pond along?

I have a small water garden. Every time that I add a water lily the raccoon invades Is it the water lily?
I'd say the water lily is offering the fish a hiding place and the raccoon knows this and is fishing. Have you lost many fish? Also water lilies are food for the raccoons.
Reply:Maybe she's using it to freshen up for a date!
Reply:Have you tried planting marigolds all around the pond? We had a similar problem, but also with chipmunks, and the marigolds really helped. If you're not familiar with them, they are small orange-yellow flowers with an unusual scent. You can get them quite cheaply at any store that sells flowers. They repel deer and most outdoor animals.
Reply:the water garden is giving the racoon a place to wash their hands!its not really the lily!the garbage is what is attracting them, they are scavengers!they always wash their hand before they eat,so they go to the water garden to do it and the lily is probably in the way!try moving the lily to a different spot or try putting in a fake one and see what happens!

My water lily buds are not making it to the surface!!!!?

i have a water lily in a half barrel, and have had it for a while, every summer i wait for some lilies to bloom. i notice quite a few buds but by the time they reach the surface they are decayed... WHY? i don't mess with it at all, just fill it with water every time it needs it. other than that i'm too scared to do anything else. ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED!

My water lily buds are not making it to the surface!!!!?
Is it getting lots of sun? Lilies won't bloom without full sun.

You may wish to re-pot it and get some fertilizer (there is special fertilizer made for lotus/lily).

It may have some kind of rotting, parasitic or fungal disease of the tuber as well, which is causing the failure. Re-potting it will offer you the chance to check out the tuber and see how it's doing.

PS--Generally speaking, lilies and lotus are easy to keep-- if this one keeps failing on you without any obvious signs of wrongdoing on your part, try getting another one and see how it does.
Reply:As has been noted, you really need to get maximum sun exposure for water lilies to both produce flower buds and also to get them to grow up-to the water surface.

I wonder if your variety is a shorter growing pygmy type, and the water level may be too deep. I grow full size and pygmy water lilies in enclosed containers, but have to maintain the correct water level, particularly for the dwarfer type: I've got a couple now with buds half way up, and going sideways, because I've been away and rainfall has overfilled their tubs.

Another option is to add some specialized water lily feed, into the soil. Aquatic plant suppliers will stock this, and will also ensure your plants are vigorous, and have enough nutrients to grow to their potential.
Reply:Sun, sun, sun. They will not flower half way down a dark barrel.

This famous puzzle is about a water lily that Henry W. Longfellow introduced into his novel, Kavenaugh:

When the stem of a water lily is vertical the blossom is 10 centimeters above the surface of the lake. If you pull the lily to one side keeping the stem straight the blossom touches the water at a spot 21 centimeters from where the stem formerly cut the surface. How deep is the water?

This famous puzzle is about a water lily that Henry W. Longfellow introduced into his novel, Kavenaugh:?
Depth of water = x

Height of water lily = (x+10)

x, 21 and (x+10) form a right-angled triangle, with (x+10) as the hypotenuse.

x² + 21² = (x+10)²

x² + 441 = x² + 20x + 100

20x = 341cm

x = 17.05cm

The depth of the water is 17.05cm.
Reply:Let d = depth of water

=%26gt; (d + 10)^2 - d^2 = (21)^2

=%26gt; 10 * (2d + 10) = (21)^2

=%26gt; d

= (44.1 -10) / 2

= 17.05 cm.

depth = 44.1 cm.
Reply:For 2 intersecting chords A and B of a circle, the product of the divided lengths of Chord A and Chord B are equal.

The stem of the lily is attached at the center of the circular arc of radius R you get by pulling the lily to the side, and at the lake bottom. (Draw the picture!)

So 10*(d+R)=21*21, and R=10+d

10*(2d+10) = 441

20d = 341

d = 17.05 cm

Pine/zebrina/water lily cuticle?

I am learning about the plant kingdom in biology and I am a bit confused about something I have just come across. I read that pine needles have thick cuticles and sunken stomata to retain moisture. I have also read that Zebrina is a tropical plant and I know that the water lily is an aquatic plant.

At the end of our chapter it asks which of these 3 (pine, zebrina, water lily) has the thickest cuticle, middle, and thinnest. Can anyone help me out here? I don't understand what the answer would be and searching the web is not helping.

Pine/zebrina/water lily cuticle?
Pine has the thickest, zebrina in the middle and water lily the thinnest.

The cuticle helps the plant retain water. A thicker cuticle is better at retaining water than a thin one. Pine trees don't live in a very moist environment when compared to zebrina and water lilys so they have a thicker cuticle.

Zebrina are in a moister climate than pine but they are not constantly in water like water lilys. They can afford to have a thicker cuticle. Water lilys don't have to worry much at all about retaining water because they live in water. A thick cuticle for a water lily would be a waist of resources and time making it.

Water Lily help!?

I have a 200 Gal Goldfish pond with water lily's and about 20 goldfish.... My lily is dying. Any idea why? I bought the lily at Walmart and for the longest time it was growing like crazy. Now all the leaves are changing colors and dying off? Do you think theres too much ammonia in the water from the fish???

Water Lily help!?
If the lily is from Walmart, chances are you got it in one of those "drop-in-and-go" mesh baskets? The mesh baskets are great for starters, but they lack the other macronutrients a lily needs to thrive. That's why they include the fertilizer tablets. I would recommend buying a "LRG SQUARE BASKET " from Amazon or a pond supply store, flling it with potting soil all around the lily roots, and top it off by a half inch of pea gravel. Push one fertilizer tablet into the center near the roots of the lily and cross your fingers. Good Luck!

P.S. I normally don't advocate the use of pond fertilizers or potting soil, as they typically lead to a macronutrient overload and fuel numerous algae problems. There are better ways to pot the lily once it recovers. Let me know when you are ready.
Reply:You do have too many fish. Have you got some sort of aerator?

Water lily questions?

I recently bought some water lily bulbs for my fish tanks. I moved some of my fish in to a bigger tank from a 10 gal in to a 55gal and now have the 10 gal open. I want the lilys to be well established before putting them in to the other tanks i have. Do I need to leave the heater and air pump going in the 10 gal with only the lilys in there? If so what should the water temp be?

Water lily questions?
I have water lilies in my tanks. They are beautiful. to answer your question... Keep the heater it will help them grow. Get rid of the filter and the air pump after the bulbs have sprouted.. Plants need carbon dioxide tho so put a few hard to kill fish(danios, barbs, tetras etc) in with them. Plus the plants need lots of fish poo. The fish won't need air because the plants will produce enough oxygen. Also make sure they get at least 8 hours of sunlight a day. They will grow faster that way.
Reply:the heater is not necessary as long as your house isn't in the 50s. they need a lot of light and co2 or they will grow kind of anemic looking. do you want them on the top of your water in the tanks? you have to do a lot of trimming to keep them below the water line. its like doing bonsai. -- you grow it out some and cut it way back.
Reply:water lilies need a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight a day to flower...that would cook your fish.
Reply:A few things toconsider. Pond lillies to survive need a few things. Direct sunlight. If you are willing to change your bulbs, go for it.

Most lillies have pestacides attached to them. Be sure they are cleaned well before attempting to place them in your tank.

Lillies also need a mud or substrate to grow well and anchor. If you leave them in a container, be sure the sand and mud are cleaned prior to putting them into the tank.

Lillies need room to grow. They can be trimmed to keep in check but with proper conditions, can quickly grow out of control.

Your lillies will grow above the water surface check your lighting and hood for adaquate room for growth and flowering.

DO NOT turn your filters off. Even in a 10 gallon tank. You are going to have to leave at least one fish in your tank for healthy lillies.

Lillies roots, due to the quick growth rot quickly and can reak havock on your water conditions.

Temperatures according to your fish. 72-80

All that considered. go for it. and good luck
Reply:ummm.... i would really consider another type of plant for your aquariums - water lillies get really big and spread (if you can get them to grow indoors).... and are far better suited for outside ponds where they have natural sunlight... and lots of space
Reply:Water lillies are not aquarium plants. One water lilly pad, and these are the small ones, can get to be 8 inches across. Water lillies also need a growing medium that really shouldn't be introduced into aquariums. Also, water lillies need still water. They will never bloom with the moving water in an aquarium. These are not appropriate for an aquarium. If you have a pond, you can put them out there in the springtime. You need to take out these water lillies and get appropriate aquarium plants.

Water Lily?

Why wont my lily bloom? It is in stagenent water I had it for two years and every year I am dissapointed.

Water Lily?
If it's in a container it's probably too crowded to bloom after two years. They need to be in full sun and in still, not stagnant water. You need to fertilize lilies about once a month to get a good bloom out of them. Lilytabs are what I use.
